Official death toll from China quake hits 1,706

BEIJING, April 18 (Reuters) - The official death toll from last week's earthquake in Yushu county, Qinghai province, has risen to 1,706, the Xinhua news agency said on Sunday.

Tibetan monks have said the official count had missed hundreds of bodies brought to monasteries for cremation or traditional sky burial.

Aid continues to flow in to Gyegu, the county seat of Yushu, as survivors become increasingly desperate for food and shelter. (Reporting by Jim Bai and Lucy Hornby; editing by Bill Tarrant)
